Garam's Prejudice

This book is about my interpretation of foreign languages. When I heard foreign languages for the first time, it is similar to tasting new dishes from other countries. We don’t know much about other ingredients or fragrance when we try new food. Like this, when I hear other languages,
I accept them as only sounds without meanings or cultures. I think it is a kind of prejudice of mine.

Generally, we think prejudice means a negative perspective of others, but it also contains overgeneralization. The etymology of prejudice comes from old French, 'préjudice', and it comes from Latin, 'praeiūdicium' which comes from prae(before) and iūdicium(judgement). So I want to interpret foreign languages as a sound before knowing and understanding them.

Graphic Standard

This project is about making graphic standards.
I always have taken many photos everyday, when I saw my album one day, I thought "Everything in the world is made by various graphic elements."
I wanted to find the basic elements of graphics, they seemed to be divided into colors, straight lines and curves, patterns and symbols created by them. I tried to make the most common graphic standards.

The first 9 standards I set, and made their first basis graphics on the dot backgrounds. They are consisted of straight-line, curve-line, black and white colors, a variety of colors, symbols, mosaic patterns, repeated patterns, and warped things.
I combined them to make second, third, and fourth stages' graphic. They are combined and divided each other and continue to create new images and new standards.

What is the prize?

This is an AR board game for Korean gamers and Europeana. Europeana is an archiving form of European cultural, historical heritage. You can enjoy the game based on real colonization history of Europe and Korea as well because it is consisted of learning history and playing entertainment. You can choose four different players who have different abilities(stats) which are weapon, money, negotiation, diplomacy, protest, and culture.

In the 'spot', the players can earn another ability. In the 'land', the players fight with enemies who have different abilities with them. In every spot and land, you can check a specific history event on it, and a confronted situation with a specific enemy in the AR screen. If the player had more abilities than the enemy, it wins. The reward for winner is apology.

It is my hand-coding website about my memory. You can read my writing journal when you hover on the photos, and you can move mood-stickers on it. I have tried to use different forms of writing journal like apple note, blog, illustration to memorize and document my memory. Documentation my memories help me to clarify my worries in my head and try to solve the problems. And also, it helps to remember nice moments.

Particularly using web-zine to document my memories was like expanding my memories because I could interact with my memories and change their mood and characteristics.

More Hierarchy, More Weight

In Korea, we have one more type of language compared to English. It is honorific language. We have used it particularly when we meet older generations or strangers. Thus, we have to use two different types of language depending on the situations. Speaking honorific language makes me, sometimes, I have to try to speak so carefully, so, in many times, I'm not able to say what I really want to say.

I imagined if there is 'weight' of the language, Korean has more weight compared to English since it has more uses, levels, and hierarchy.

It is about the case of COVID-19 virus. I thought the virus has the characteristic of ‘accidental’ and ‘coincidence’. I think it happened to appear in specific area and time. When the virus is sticked someone, it just happened to move. Virus typography shows the shapes in coincidence.
The virus has a hooked shape and it tries to stick to others to move. Virus typography has hooks as well, and when they are united and split, they seem to another shape.
